Most will use the dsm to define the disorder because they need to meet at atleast 2 criteria. Continuum: normal abnormal, normal vs. abnormal, mental health vs. Mental illness: everyone is deviant, maladaptive, or distressed, it"s a matter of degree, not either or! A word of caution: watch out for psych student syndrome, only properly trained, competent clicinans can diagnosed. Dsm: syndromes, has existed since 1952 with serval revisions, on edition 5, group disorders by catergory, checklist of observable symptoms. Labeling the disorder: we do not use acohloic/schizophreina, please do not label the person, it is a person with acohlic. A few prominent ways we can get in trouble. The cat drawer photos changed over time they become more fragmented, looking less like a cat. Posistive : presence of something that should not be there. Delusions :false beliefs, erroneous belief that is fixed and firmly held despite contradictory evidence example: paranora, people are watching me.
