2P12 March 26 Marriage - U shaped curve o “honeymoon” phase in the beginning of the relationship, lower levels of satisfaction when children are growing up, higher levels of happiness in retirement when more time can be spent on their relationship - Conservation style o Positive to negative statements ratio  5:1 o disagreements are not personal  focus on the issue not the person o give each other space - Steinberg’s Triangular Theory of Love (1986, 1988, 2004) o Different types of love  Passion  Intimacy  Commitment o Intimacy + Commitment = companionate marriage, long lasting o Intimacy + passion = romantic love o Passion + commitment = purely sexual marriage o Passion + commitment + intimacy = consummate love; long lasting, loving, strong Parenthood - Less intimate and happy - Motherhood o Joyful vs. painful  Intensity of joy or pain will vary among time period and family o Sacrifice time doing housework, with friends, community activities  Main focus turns to family responsibilities - Fatherhood o Increasingly involved in children’s lives  More often involved with sons  More often involved with play than parental duties
