PSYC 2P20 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Iconic Memory
Document Summary
Distinct from other types of memories; it is very complete. Essentially a brief picture of what has just been seen; information is an exact physical copy. Allows the stimulus to be accessible for a longer period of time. Often do not notice that you are using iconic memory. The capacity and duration can be tested using sperling"s partial report technique. Ps shown 3 x 4 matrix of letters for a very brief duration. Ps is asked to immediately recall the letter presented. Whole report condition: ps try to recall all 12 letters. Found that subjects could only report 4 or 5 letters (40%) Early research suggested that maybe only 4 or 5 letters could be perceived by an individual. Sperling suggests that there is a feeling that you see everything, but it fades before you can recall. He suggested there was a complete, but short-lasting iconic memory.
