6 or more for children or 5 or more for adults: carless mistakes, difficulty sustaining attention, does not listen, does not follow instructions, disorganized, avoids work requiring sustained mental effort, loses things, distractible, forgetful. At leats 6 of 9 (5 for aults) symptoms of inattention; hyperactive- impulsive symptom criteria not met. Appear daydreamy, spacy, in a fog, easily confused. Adhd-hi: at least 6( 5 for adults) symptoms of hyperactivity- impulsivity; criteria for inattention not met. Adhd-c: 6(5 for adults) or more symptoms of both inattention and hyperactivity-impulsivity. Inconsistent with developmental level; negatively impacts social or educational/occupational functioning. Several symptoms occur in two or more settings. Sympatoms interfere with, or reduce quality of, social, occupational/educational functioning. Mostly average or above average iq, but up to 80% have learning disability. 32-40% drop out of school, 5-10% complete college. Prevalence: 6% of school age children in north america; 4 times more common in boys.
