Document Summary

Health is generally considered from a biological/medical sciences point of view. Health psychology generally considers things outside of these realms. There must be a clear understanding of both biology and psychology for health psychology to be effective. Health psychology considers things like lifestyle, outlook on life, stress level, employment, social connections and environmental influences: ie. Pharmacological and surgical methods do not always work on their own. Defined it is the compilation of all that psychology has to offer to the diagnosis and treatment of illness as well as people"s attempts to maintain health and well being. Another definition: the application of psychological principles to the understanding and improvement of our health, a common cited example. The conflict between psychological conflict and physical symptoms. Hypertension (high blood pressure) and the inability to express anger in an appropriate manner. The development of health psychology as a discipline. Only recently did we discover that many illnesses are a result of germs.
