Document Summary
Due to mortality, organisms must reproduce due to mortality, organisms must reproduce and carry on over time. Reproduction is a critical motivation for evolution to occur and will only occur if an organism has met the challenges of survival to adulthood carry on over time. The characteristics that make up the new generation are those which have led to survival and reproduction in previous generations. Genes that lead to reproductive motivation work directly to make copies of themselves. Reproduction is competitive and there is a constant tendency toward overproduction of numbers in all species. Not all individuals survive to reproduction age which makes evolution an ongoing process. Females - 10"s of thousands of ova over a lifetime, formed prenatally and mature after puberty. Each month ova mature and are released with ovulation. By menopause fertility is lost - even as it approaches the probability of an ova being defective increases.
