Media sensationalizes serial killers in movies, books, songs. Post-mortem manipulation, mutilation, cannibalism: necrophilia, anthropophagy. Serial killer typologies (sewall, krupp & lalumiere, 2013) Motivated by monetary gain or histrionic attention seeking. Female serial killer typologies (holmes & holmes, 1994) Adolescence and early adulthood: escalating criminality, sadistic sexual fantasies, fantasy. Neurpsychological and sociocultural theories of serial killing. Neurochemistry: serotonin, gaba, dopamine and norepinephrine, testosterone, cortisol. Neuroimaging: frontal lobe dysfunction, temporal lobe dysfunction. Schlesinger (2000): sexual sadism, intense fantasy, compulsion to act out fantasy. Beech & mitchell (2005): cognitive styles: it"s a dangerous world, male sex drive is uncontrollable, women are sex objects, entitlement, women are unknowable. Exposure to violent influences transition from: violent to sexual urges, to elaborate fantasies, to violent sexual behaviour. Physical, structural and social influences: availability of appropriate victims, number of places for concealment, population density, population characteristics, population demographics. Depends on the subtype: impulsive, violent, disorganized killers.
