The 1954 research council spawned high level research laboratories in each of the companies producing tobacco products: waning to keep their products wanted and likely tried to make them more addicted to do this. Put it into many publicaions (newspapers/magazines) and news shows: that medical research of recent years indicated many possible causes of lung cancer. Indeed the validity of the staisics themselves is quesioned by numerous scienists. All the tobacco industry"s internal research was repressed, secret and not for public presentaion: all researchers needed to sign conideniality contracts. Healthcare faciliies and insurance companies found that the costs of dealing with the adverse. Outcomes from long-term use of tobacco products were mouning: helping to pay for the treatments of lung, throat, tongue and esophageal cancers. Blue cross and blue shield insurance companies of minnesota sued the tobacco industry in an efort to recoup costs. 1994 the state government of minnesota joined with blue cross and blue shield in the lawsuit.
