What is a theory: an explanation of how and why something is happening. Functionalists: rich, straight, privileged, able-bodied, white men at top who saw society from their pov. Society is an organism body that has set of interdependent parts that produce a balanced equilibrium. Society restrains the beast through institutions, laws, and norms that tell us otherwise. Goffman also a social order theorist he said we put on a version of ourself for world. Mechanical solidarity (traditional, simple all have similar set of skills, like milking cows) Organic is stronger sense of solidarity bc we depend on each other more. Ex-we"re not born having a taste for certain brands, but we learn it to function in society. He isn"t saying to resist it, he"s just saying yeah it happens , it keeps things running smoothly. *social facts are external to us, and we internalize them. Learn to act, dress, speak appropriately, etc.
