Violence = an enormous range of actions, beyond physical & sexual . Includes psychological, emotional, & verbal abuse, as well as economic/financial & spiritual coercion & criminal harassment. In intimate relations: includes infanticide, female genital cutting, incest, child abuse, dating violence & date rape, dowry killings & bride burnings, wife abuse & marital rape. One of the contributions of feminism is the increased knowledge about violence in intimate relationships. The 2nd wave of the women"s movement rejected traditional societal & academic understandings of explanations for violence against women. Feminists maintained there was more to the story of battered women" than their experiences with violence & the relationship in which violence is enacted. The women"s movement raised the consciousness of women & our entire society regarding the extent of violence against women. Violence against women was transformed from a private trouble into a public issue over the last few decades. Historically, girls were a form of property within the traditional family.
