Theories: explanations developed from careful observations of the social world we call these observations empirical data. Research: systematic processes by which we gather empirical data. Goal of social research: learn something about the social world. Systematic process of social research: gather empirical date, describe, explain (develop theory) Used to (1) determine cause/effect or (2) probability- Philosophy of quantitate research borrowed from physical sciences. A single objective truth can be discovered. Can be a single objective truth that is either right or wrong. Process of deduction: 3 stages: develop a theory from other research, develop hypothesis (logical extensions of the theory), sample, design, collect data and conduct statistical analyses. Cause: mothers working outside of home w children are being pulled into too many. Directions bc of all the roles being played = a lot of stress. Analysis: women"s experience was lower when working than being at home w child. Says too little about too much of social life.
