March 9, 2016: introduction to critical animal studies -dr. lauren colman, what is critical animal studies. Cas, analyzes economic, sociological, historical, and ethical aspects of human-animal relation. Students can take a range of cas courses in sociology: social construct. A social mechanism, phenomenon,or category created by society, a perception of an individual, group, idea that is constructed through cultural or social practice. Ex, women are inherently motherly stereotype a social construction: black dog syndrome. Sociology doesn"t yet look at the social construction of animals. They are generally put in the companion category, as mens best friend . Black dod syndrome high euthanasia rates and low adoption rates of black dogs, especially large black dogs, in animal shelters. Black large dogs socially constructed as more aggressive. Blackness often painted in negative view, vs. whiteness. Put in a category as food product. They are highly social, and as smart as dogs.
