A set of forces exerted by people over one another and themselves that encourages a particular behavior. Economy is a social force that shapes what/how we do things. Individual vs. social explanations: wright mills (1959) Sociologist imagination : type of thinking that connects social forces to individuals" life. Individual experiences are connected in the workings of society. Students must shift perspectives from personal to social to see their interconnections. Example: ba degrees granted in canada in 2011. Albert einstein- the significant problems we face cannot be solved at the same level of thinking we were at when we created them . Capitalism creates poverty but we cannot go to capitalists to fix the problem. James baldwin- education is there for us to decide what we believe and not listen to only other opinions. Society wants a person that will just obey the rules, not ask questions and exploit these maters (sociological imagination) .
