Social theory = a system of interconnected abstractions or ideas that condenses and organizes knowledge about the social world. Theories explain how things work parts of a theory: Assumptions - necessary starting points that have not been tested i. e. if we assume people have internet access. Relationships - how the concepts are related to one another i. e. highly identi ed fans are more likely to utilize new media to follow the team aspects of theory: direction deductive approach: Begin with abstract relations among concepts and move towards concrete empirical evidence i. e. gathering data to test your theory that sport fan alumni donate more money to their college than non-fan alumni inductive approach: The most common type of explanation is the casual explanation - used when the relationship is one of cause and effect. Positive relationship = an association between 2 variables such that as values on one increases, values on the other also increase.
