SPMA 1P91 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Organizational Culture, Bill Barilko, Performance Appraisal
Document Summary
Remove the concept of "organized" and you"ve got play. (difference between recreation and leisure and spma) Organizations are "social entities that are goal-oriented are designed as deliberately structured and coordinated activity systems & are linked to the external environment. " (text p. 84) To achieve goals, people form organizations because a collective can achieve more than the individual. Organizations must operate within two kinds of environments. General: external to the organization such as economic, political, demographics, etc. Specific: having to do with the organizations stakeholders, such as customers, suppliers, distributors, competitors, etc. Effectiveness: the extent to which organizational goals are achieved. Efficiency: achieving goals with a minimum of resources. If the yankees win the world series one year, but the a"s win it the next spending 50% less both teams are effective but the a"s are more efficient. Be careful, goals must be understood by all the organizations stakeholders to judge effectiveness.
