We live in a highly visual world, a world in which we encounter images in almost every aspect of our lives. Think about how many images you"ve encountered already today. Perhaps you received a message from a friend or family member with pictures attached. If you were at work or at an appointment, did you see images there (e. g. : posters, advertisements, etc. The point is that we are surrounded by so many images that we sometimes don"t even notice them! We also often don"t stop to think about how the images we encounter were created, or why an image makes us feel a certain way. The study of visual culture grew out of the field of art history, but it focuses on much more than images that are classified as art.
