Might not be able to depend solely on government to make changes to better women"s and girls" lives: third wave feminism emerged from a variety of sources. In its safe" form girl power" is sexy, materialistic, heteronormative. In pop culture, girl power figures tend to be white, middle-class and straight. Sexy" in a traditional way; thin, fit, large breasts, white. In its potential form, girl power positions young women as producers not consumers, diverse, and willing to challenge power hierarchies. Ted talk: dr. lyn mikel brown. (8:14 seconds). First step in transformation: scaffold their activism give them tools, info, etc. they need to transform silence into action, get out of the way. Girls will experience themselves differently and will become innovators. Girl power is not about: shopping/consuming as a power, a personal style" or attitude", about sexual exploitation being cool" or funny. Girl power is about: thinking critically, activist oriented, challenging power systems, creating own cultural items.
