Perceptions of what accents and dialects means. Accent and association with perceived notion of group. Accent: variation in speech sounds or signs within or accorss individual or groups of speakers (influenced by age, class, gender, social groups, as well as by region) A variety of language determined normally by geographic factors and/or social factors. Difference between language and dialect is power (who gets to be the language and which the power, more sociopolitical power rather than linguistics) no clear line between. A way of using language in certain contexts and situations (formality of expression, choice of vocabulary, degree of explicitness) Intrapersonal because speakers usually control a repertoire of register for different circumstances. Idiolect: the speech pattern of one individual person idiolects also change with time/ context/ speech partner etc. (pick up things we like, get rid of tother things) Sociolect: a variety of a language associated with a specific group (age, class, institutional affiliation etc. )
