Realism takes on a variety of diferent meanings. The realist movement (middle of the 19th century) An art movement based on the belief that only the things of an arist"s own ime and place including subjects previously considered too mundane or ugly for art are the proper subjects for art. 19th century"s coninuaion of the enlightenment belief that knowledge should be based on observaion and direct experience. Posiivism (august comte; 1798-1857): the belief that every worthwhile proposiion can be proved scieniically, logically, or mathemaically. 1848 ani-authority revoluions that afected most european countries. They were inspired by the social and economic condiions that led karl marx and friedrich. Engels to publish the communist manifesto (1848), and by anger against authoritarian and eliist (ani-democraic) government regimes. Invenion of photography in 1839 by louis daguerre in france ( daguerreotype ) and by henry fox talbot in england ( calotype )
