BIOL 1902 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Orb-Weaver Spider, Thomisidae, Tiger Beetle
Document Summary
Bats increase frequency of ticks when their ultrasonic sounds hit an object. Shrews use ultrasound due to their smaller eyes. Some hunters use their sense of smell (elongated snout and vomeronsal/jacobson organ) Some animals (foxes, weasels, wolves) hunt closer to dusk because the scent trails are easier to track. Racoons have touch-sensitive front paws (tactile paws) that send sensory information to the brain. Vibrissae: special hairs have sensory cells at their base that sends signals to the brain usually located on the face of the animal. Rictal bristles: special feathers with sensory cells (whippoorwills) around the mouth. Eimer"s organs: filled with sensory cells (star-nosed moles nose protuberances) Herbst corpuscles: filled with sensory cells (sandpiper"s bill tips and woodpecker"s tongue tips) because of how they feed in the mud. Ducks have a nail (unguis) with sensory cells at the tip of their bill.
