BIOL 1902 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Abies Balsamea, Flesh Fly, Ovipositor
Document Summary
Skunk cabbage is a plant that metabolizes to create energy. This energy melts snow around it allowing it to get sunlight. Desiccation is another challenge plants face in cold weather (they become extremely dry). Tree are a spire shape (triangle shape in balsam fir). Extreme heat is also a threat to plants and other living things. Plants curl their leaves when hot to reduce surface area. Some insects use obelisk (special posture) to reduce surface area. Others us stilting (raise their body off the ground) to get away from heat. Foxes pant as a method of evaporative cooling. Doves use this process for cooling by increasing internal temperatures to get cold. Herbivory refers to eating live plants, detritovore refers to animals that eat dead plant matter. Clams are filter feeders, they filter water to attain nutrients. Some animals such as larvae use labral brushes which pull and filter food to them.
