BIOL 1902 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Elater, Autotomy, Striped Skunk
Document Summary
Differential survival - some offspring survive and some do not. Some have as a startle pattern, hidden away. Some have eyespots always on display to make them look larger. They deflect the attack to a non vital body part. Ex: some butterflies have tails (hairstreak) and fake eyespot around tail to make it appear like the head. Fake antennas and heads can serve as distraction or deflection structures. Ex: five-lined skink - when it is attacked the tail comes off and bounces around like living life form to fool predators (autotomy) Shells can be made of calcium (snail) Blanding turtle: partly closes front of shell. Snapping turtle: defends by trying to bite, does not have bottom shell so it cannot go inside. Physical defenses can also be soft structures. Difference is that etc leaves tent to feed and have no food inside the web, webworm has food inside the tent and therefore bigger tents.
