BIOL 1902 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Gray Tree Frog, Screech Owl, Papilio Cresphontes
Document Summary
Camouflage means you are hidden from the eye, also known as concealment. For camouflage to work, the animal has to adapt to their environment, by staying still, changing colour, or background matching (adapting to the environment around you). Certain patterns help you hide from their environment, for example certain birds have a blotchy pattern to hide in a forest floor, with some light coming through. Every habitat has general patterns, for example the grasslands have vertical lines. A lot of birds living in this habitat have vertical lines. Some animals live in certain spots in the environment, such as the eastern screech owl, living in trees, or a gray tree frog. These animals are mostly nocturnal because they are able to hide better during the day. Mimicking of the background is another form of background matching. For example, bark mimicking of the tree frog.
