Mycoheterotrophs: get food from fungus: ex. Indian pipe carbon products come from living plants through fungal helper (parasite) Also dwarf rattlesnake plantain (green leaves; means they manufacture their own food too) Many shade-swelling orchids photosynthesize & steal carbon from other plants through mycorrhizae these are called mixotrophs. Complete parasite, but doesn"t depend on fungus to get food. Cancer-root: no leaves & no mycorrhizae, tracks chemicals (stigolactones) release by host plants to attract mycorrhizae, its roots form haustoria on roots of other plants. Witch"s broom: one local plant holoparasitic on branches: on black spruce, coniferous trees, allows abnormal growth in trees. Solutions: leaves w/ smaller surface area, tiny leaves growing on approx. Sand dunes = extremely sunny & hot places: plants here often have leaves that are highly dissected. Dissected leaves have reduced surface area ex. Plants are just like animals in so very many ways: Cell splits in half, creates carbon copy.
