Document Summary

Most plants are autotrophic (an organism capable of synthesizing its own food from inorganic substances using light or chemical energy) Many shade-dwelling orchids photosynthesize and steal carbon from other plants through plants through mycorrhizae. Term for a plant that does both (stated above) is called a mixotroph. Tracks chemicals (strigolactones) released by host plant to attract mycorrhizae steals food from other plants without mycorrhizae. Its roots form haustoria on the roots of other plants. Holoparasite: complete parasite not dependent on fungus. It gets the food directly itself by tracking down the roots of other plants through their chemical releases. Internal fertilization: frogs mate using a method called amplexus (male frog hold the female by the waist, sponges reproduce sexually internally. When a species has both male and female sexes, its called a hermaphrodite. Some sperm donors never meet even when internal fertilization occurs. Clams also send their sperm into the water. Hermaphroditism doubles an animal"s chance of reproducing.
