Lect 16 some plants don"t need sunlight (ex:coralroot) bcz they have fungal helpers on the roots (do mycorrhizae-they get nutrients from their fungal partners therefore called mycoheterotrophs) Indian pipe also-c products from living plants therefore behaves like a parasites. Most plants are autotrophs some hv fungal partners that will get c but they also have green leaves, so they make their own food and get it from others also. Many shade-dweling orchids photosynthesize and steal c from other plants through mycorrhizae. Plants that do both is called myxotrophs cankerroot=no leaves and no mycorrhizae. Tracks chem released by host plant to attract mycorrhizae (to attract fungus to them) Its roots form haustoria on the roots of the other plants therefore we call them holoparasite one local plant is holoparasitic on branches (conifers trees) if they have a clump we call it witch"s broom.
