Since muscles only contract, a solid or fluid system is needed to permit muscles to stretch back. May or may not provide protection/support systems as well to original length o. There are four types of skeletons o o o o. Use compressive fluid within the body to allow for movement. Animal has both circular and longitudinal muscles throughout the body o. Circular: the muscle fibers make a cylinder shape o. The diameter of the muscle decreases when contracted causing the animal to stretch. Longitudinal: muscle fibers run in an anterior/posterior direction. Diameter increases when contracted, causing the animal to shorten. Run in diagonals across the body so that the body doesn"t collapse. The body is covered in a mesh of collagen fibers to help keep shape and control of movement o. Sea anemones and nematodes also use this system for movement. Made of a large number of small bony elements called ossicles embedded in connective tissue o o.
