BIOL 2903 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Carolinian Forest, Canadian Shield, Silt
Document Summary
Lichen & the tundra - natural history of ontario (lecture 2) The most common type of igneous rock in ontario is granite. In ontario the biggest area of highlands is the canadian shield. Water is important for biodiversity; large bodies of water modify temperatures and winds. Clay is very compact because it is so small and does not allow water to get through. Erratic: rocks on top of others rocks that are of different rock types (ex: granite on top of limestone). Striations (scratches): on rock are caused by ice over rock (glaciation glacial movement). The ice age (the pleistocene) changed the landscape dramatically. Only a small drop in average temperature is needed for glaciers to form. The weight of the snow makes the bottom section turn to ice. - lichen: the ones that grow tightly to the rock are called (crustose lichen). Lichens are symbiotic relationships between fungi and algae (i. e. made of fungi and algae).
