Lecture 19 natural history peatlands & forest fragmentation. Birds of marshes: great blue heron: large bird of cattail marshes, eats frogs, fish, and mammals (chipmunks). Great egret: almost wiped out in the 1700/1800s for women"s hats. Black-crowned night-heron: hide in the day time (sleeping all day long) and hunt at night. Certain ducks do well in marshes (ducks that filter feed preferring shallow water) such as mallards. *** cattail marshes are a type of wetland. They are very productive (transports nutrients and a lot of biomass duckweed to cattails). Cedar woods (swamps): cedars tolerate a lot of moisture. Cedar grow in here water adapted trees. Shady habitat and due to the moisture lots of mosses. Rich spots for orchids (round-leaved orchid have big leaves parallel to the ground & pink lady slipper). Yellow lady"s slipper and the showy lady"s slipper. Cedar swamps last a long time because cedars are long lived trees.
