Prairie/western boreal (continued) - natural history of ontario (lecture 10) White winged crossbills (white wing bars) cannot open jack pine cones. Fire opens the cones, taking at least greater then 50 degrees. They are termed serotinous cones there is a delayed reaction when the seeds are released after the cones open. This is so the seeds will not be damaged by the fire. There is one bird tied to jack pines, the kirtland"s warbler. Their entire ecology depends on jack pines (jack pine dependent), they nest in the jack pines that are a specific age and size (nesting only in jack pines 5-15 years old that are 2 to 5m tall). The birds are endangered, there are burns done on purpose to keep the numbers up. Keep cowbirds out of their area so their numbers stay up as well. If the area is wetter this tree is more common black spruce.
