Document Summary

Superior & eastern boreal - natural history of ontario (lecture 11) In the prairie boreal, trees can fall down due to the wind because of the thin soil base. Blowdown is the term of trees fallen down by wind, it makes it difficult for animals to move throughout the forest. Lake superior is found here, and affects the boreal forest. It is the largest freshwater lake in the world (>82,000km) (depth = up to 400m avg =149m) (volume = 12,000km^3). The lake affects the temperature, making the area warmer (warmer then areas that are just as north). Big bodies of water heat very slowly but once they heat up it takes a long time to lose that heat. Lake superior depresses summer temperatures giving coastal summers. The north shore of lake superior has some o the highest elevations in. One reason is a great variety of igneous and metamorphic rock types (different minerals and different concentrations).
