Presence of lichen and moss traps this material so soil formation can begin. Change in a given area in the living organisms that live there is called succession: water and plants continues to break down the rock. The dissolved and physically broken rocks help form more soil: start with bare rock and then eventually end up with forests covering the land. When you have habitats, you start having animals appear.
