Workplace motivation: the psychological forces that determine the direction of peoples behavior, level of effort, and persistence. Persistence: how long a person keeps on trying. Direction: what a person is trying to do and where they are directing there efforts. Needs-based (content) theories: focus on what motivates employees (eg maslows heiarchy, based on assumption that individuals have needs creating internal tensions, that they are motivated to eliminate. Process theories: focus on how motivation is evoked (goal-setting theory) Reinforcement: modifying employee s behavior through the appropriate use of immediate rewards and punishment. Governed by the law of effect/ principle of operant conditioning. Positive reinforcement: give pleasant consequences following desired behavior. Negative reinforcement: withdraw unpleasant consequences following desired behavior. Punishment: give unpleasant consequences following undesired behavior.
