CLCV 2500 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Sophocles, Roman Mythology, Homeric Hymns
Document Summary
Classical mythology, classical meaning ancient greek and roman: around the 5th century bc is what we think of as the classical age of greece. The greeks were all about art and philosophy, they are much more classical. The romans were all about fighting: classical greece is the peak of greek civilization. We have the most texts and studies from this period in time: the 5th century showed the importance of athens. The athenians had an empire that started out as a defensive against the persians. After they beat the persians, the athenians formed into a more imperial structure: athens was a cultural centre for the greek world. The leading philosophers went to speak, teach, and show off: this is a time of the great names of greece (playwrights, historians, teachers). They clustered in athens around this time period: herodotus was always known as being the first philosopher.
