CLCV 2906 Lecture Notes - Lecture 16: Hieratic, Atef, Inbreeding
Document Summary
Mummification is a practice that starts in the middle kingdom, and they drilled holes in the grave complex so the ba can observe the funerary rites. Starting in the second half of the middle kingdom, they set up the coffins in a way so that they"d put the head on purpose on the wjdat eye (egyptians burry on their side). This sympathetic magic allowed the dead to see the funeral. This practice begins to proliferate in the new kingdom. Re-harakhty (horus of the day), we also see the introduction of the atef crown (combination of the crown of upper egypt and lower egypt). Egypt had almost 300 years of greek rule (18 generations of inbred greeks following alexander the great, the ptolemy dynasty). Egyptian papyri love doing multiple vignettes, we find hor during the ceremony and then after with his arms raised in victory. The westcar papyri are sown in sheets (they go horizontal not vertical).
