The eighteenth dynasty started burying in the valley of the kings (despite the fact that the 13 - 17 dynasty did not) this is because they are reviving practices from the twelfth dynasty. Also starting in the 18th dynasty is having the wives being buried in the next valley over (valley of the queens), we also see aristocrats being buried in the same general area (mastaba of the aristocrats). We find that that tutankhamun is buried a mastaba as opposed to the valley of the. Kings and this is why it is preserved and not robbed in antiquity. This is problematic, and thus there is a second theory that he was actually buried in a place where a later. Pharaoh built his complex and so it was lost, though this is also problematic because we only know of one ruler with a tomb above ground khafre.
