COMM 2102 Lecture Notes - Lecture 12: Communication, Industrial Revolution
Document Summary
Communication serves as a handy way of linking theories. However, it doesn"t adequately capture variety of different kinds of communication. Example: lecture is different type of comm than text message. As thinkers we need a more robust language to capture these different kinds of communication. You need to see what arguments work on you and which ones don"t. Four ideas/arguments that we must know: all communication takes place in time and space (harold innis space and time bias) broadcasting, trade, all forms of communication are bias to either space or time . If the bias is towards space, emphasis is on commercial, government, military, bureaucratic power. If it"s bias towards time, then it"s religion, tradition, magic. Oral communication is a time bias media because it"s passed from one person to the next over time. Written communication is space biased, don"t have to be there. Materials like stone are biased in time, last a long time and can weather conditions.
