COMS 2003 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Post-Structuralism, Logocentrism, Polysemy
Document Summary
Week 10: why things are the way they are. Over time we have been taking a historical approach to understanding established theories. 50s: conformity, were a time of a cookie-cutter society. People dressed, looked, talked the same (conformity) Advertisements; the reason why we buy something is that the structure of a brand"s ads speak to us in a certain way that makes us want to buy. We can study genres of fictional stuff like we study sentences. Comedy: cultures have deep traditions built within them that determine judgement/effects of what parts in a show are funny or not. Ads: each ad is like a new ad. The ad makes sense through the arrangement of different words and components to create meaning and value. The fact that we see ads as an ad is the same reason why we understand sentences for what they really are; we have internalized the rules and components of structure.
