Document Summary
Erth 2415 lecture 9 tsunami: tsunami a wave phenomenon, causes of tsunami ocean waves are often generated due to disturbances on the sea floor, mostly triggered by large earthquakes (magnitude > 7. 5). Less common by volcanic eruptions and mass movements: earth quake caused tsunami trigger is a linear source (fault on sea floor). Water moves in forward rotating circles, diameter decreases with depth. Depth at which the wave is really quiet/ undisturbed = wavelength / 2: shoaling causes the waves to interact with the sea floor. When we are approaching the shore the amplitude of the wave increases. Friction slows down the wave and wavelength decreases: wind caused waves created by friction between the wind and water surface. Waves depend on factors like velocity, duration and consistency of wind and also the length of water surface that the wind blows across.
