Purpose of talk: overview the regional setting and cause of the 1996 saguenay flood disaster, highlight impacts of flooding along four saguenay area rivers: Canadian shield: summarize mitigation implemented in response to the flood disaster, bedrock terrain with thin, generally discontinuous cover of glacial deposits, drainage courses: Locally controlled by bedrock and glacial deposits reflecting deglacial history: channels morphology vary locally, channel gradients irregular (substrate changes, drainage basins contain numerous small lakes. Lake kenogami is a drainage basin that drains into the sables and chicoutimi rivers, both of which have a large dam at the mouth. Both river has run-of- the-river dams located do river in spots of bedrock. July 1996 extreme flood caused by rainstorm: 114mm had fallen before store (ground saturated, excess of 250mm fell within 3 days from july 18-21. Lake k nogami: source of sables and chicoutimi rivers, inflow into the reservoir (3390 km2) 100-yr flow (1912-1995) 973 m3 /s.
