Migrants to Europe are not only from Arab countries they're also from Africa, Central
Asia, and Eastern Europe
EU did deal w Afghanistan to return thousand of people because it is “safe” now
There have been nationalistic movements against refugees coming to Europe
We need to understand countries transition of last decade because some are about to
become a member of the EU so it could bring shock w the sudden changes such as
capitalism and massive population growth in small spaces
Why can International Migration been seen as a challenge for the Nation-States? For
the European Union?
sometimes we construct people as migrant “others”
Motives and Reasons to Immigrate: there are many reasons such as war, economic
conditions, refuge seeking
There is different discourse such as forced migration (refugee) vs voluntary migration
(econ.)
These categorizations are not necessarily straightforward or valid
Migration Politics
-state remains prime actor (gov. and gov. institutions)
-emergence of governance: national, regional, and global scale
-role of non-state, private and inter-state “policy” actors
South America and Africa have policies that copied Schengen because they see the
benefits of free mobility
The EU is a leader in new approaches to migration, refugees, borders
Geopolitical constructs and geographical imaginations
