The film that we are watching today, citizen cane, is widely regarded as one of the best film ever made. It is very long so we will have to start it 9:25. So today will be shorter than last week so we will get started immediately. Broad issues around narrative, the way in which film tells stories. We will get started with classical narrative and what is the difference between a story and plot. Although this is not film history, for those involved in film history, we do have classes in the second year. Film 1000 is not a history course, but nevertheless it is useful to look at the history, to see where the conventions of narrative construction come from. (lecture begins) Usually the lumiere brothers in france are credited with inventing cinema. The early films in the 1890s don"t really have stories, they are films shot in one take.
