Three areas of film studies: film history, film theory - the nature of film/functions of cinema, film analysis - how they are conducted, how we understand them. What is cinema: combinations of images and sounds (editing) Chapter four - editing: process by which different images or shots are linked together. A short history of film editing: storyboard sketches out each shot of a film, magic lantern was used by showmen to project successive images and create illusions of the supernatural. 1895-1918: early cinema & the emergence of editing: 1906 - early cinema, crosscutting or parallel editing - technique used in the rescue sequences that conclude dozens of his films (d. w. griffith) 1919-1929: soviet montage: montage -editing that maximizes the effects of the juxtaposition of disparate shots, intellectual montage - an independent idea is framed in the mind of the viewer based on the collision of different shots.
