Believe that homer didn"t tell the story himself, but told it orally to bards. Peisistratos called all the bards claiming to know the story and had them write it down. The iliad precedes the odyssey takes place in troy: chronologically (last year of the 10 year war in troy, achilles and agamemnon ends with the death of hector (opposite from achilles) The odyssey is named after odysseus: it takes odysseus 10 years to get home, odysseus was the king of the island ithaka (ithaca) Comrades ate the cattle of the sun god and hyperion promised they would never return with. Odysseus was prevented from going home by a sea nymph, calypso, who wanted to marry him. Zeus called a meeting of the gods to talk about aegisthus. Odysseus is stranded on calypso"s island: wants to get home to his family (wife penelope and son telemachus) and his kingdom.
