Imagine a pasture by 10 people that can support 100 sheep. All the sheep now grow a bit smaller because there is less pastures and are only worth . The person with an extra sheep is sill ahead (11x. 95=10. 45) But everybody else is worse of ( 10x . 95=9. 50) others are making less. Not only an issue for taking resources out of the commons, but also for puing polluions into it. Individuals always act in their own raional self interest. 1: compeiion in the key dynamic among individuals, whether something is ethically good or bad is a funcion of the system in which that acion takes place, on a inite planet, growth must eventually stop. Key conclusions of garret hardin"s (1968: government or other authority must regulate, through force if necessary, common resources (hardin"s phrase for this: mutual coercion mutually agreed upon, preferable to force is to create systems of private property.
