Had to constantly fight with nobles, tugging away his authority. No system of royal courts, remained local. Kings consolidated the lands of france under their rule > seizing land, marriages with other nobles. Lands made them rich, could resist the efforts of local nobles. Kings could claim religious right to be superior.
