History of russian peoples before kievan state began. 2 major vegetational areas of russia (forests and the steppe), for over 2000 years, had distinct histories and distinct peoples. We know more about this area of settlement. Due to greeks who settled north of the black sea, and kept written records. 2 indigenous peoples living between 2000 b. c. and 1000 b. c. Neolithic stone-age people who did hunting and some farming, and lived in caves. From gravesites, practiced primitive form of religion. More advanced: found copper instruments in burial sites. After 1000 b. c. , overrun by more advanced outsiders. Happened plenty between 1000 b. c. and 1300 ad. Came west across the steppe between the urals and the carpathians. Some invaders stayed as overlords, bringing their own culture and leaving an. Avoided going into the northern forest zone influence. Others simply moved through towards western europe, leave little influence. Very gradual process: took years to cross the steppe.
