This lecture is all about canada"s alliances throughout history. Alliance an agreement between two or more countries to do something or not to do something. Started at 12 countries, now includes 30 countries. Formed as the cold war had its beginnings. Priority to save the western world against soviet in uence and weapons. Article 5 if one member is attacked, all members will come together to wage military action against the aggressor. Created a single airspace over north america against counter-attacks. Hitler (germany) & stalin (russia) agreed that they would not attack one another. Ex: canada looked up to britain, the us, they were special. Meant that the real alliances we had moved along much more smoothly. Good feelings didn"t last for long, but the concrete alliance to stick together remained. An optimist"s view canada is an independent country, makes own decisions for own purposes. Case studies: (these are good to think about for the exam, use as examples)
