Document Summary
Health 1001: biological basis of health: cellular and molecular origins of health and disease, genetics, and immunity. Frequent slight elevations in body temp help to fight microorganisms: mucous membranes. In the respiratory tract and other linings of the body help to ingulf pathogens: cilia help sweep unwanted invaders out the body in the form of tears, snot, and ear wax. The bodies defensive system, causes inflammation and wards off infection. Inflammation-inflammation is fundamentally a protective response, the ultimate goal of which is to rid the organism of both the initial cause of cell injury (e. g. , microbes, toxins) and the consequences of such injury (e. g. , necrotic cells and tissues). Without inflammation, infections would go unchecked, wounds would never heal, and injured organs might remain permanent festering sores. Inflammation is a complicated process that involves blood vessels, blood cells, proteins and other molecules in the blood and tissue.
