As a canadian and a settler on the territory of the mississaugas of the credit, these terms were only introduced to me about four years ago when i enrolled in my first indigenous studies class out of curiosity. Throughout my academic career, i was never taught about. I was never given the opportunity to engage with these terms or concepts until i came to carleton university and began taking classes, in which now i minor in indigenous studies. Ignorance towards this topic was very prevalent in my elementary and secondary academic career. Shockingly and arrogantly, the most interaction i had with any understanding of indigenous history, tradition, and practices was reading twilight in ninth grade english class. Which, without being said, is a narrow, inaccurate depiction. However, it truly was the first time i experienced any content on a creation story and the view of a tribe , which is what the book referred to the group as.
